Now, when I say the card that lets us in the gate......you probably think I mean a card to give us magnetic access through a gate, right? Not quite the case there. This is a small laminated card that you show the man (Jose Luis) that lives in the little house by the gate so that he will let us into San Lorenzo. Cool, huh?
So, it was a great reunion with Pepe and Minerva. Jim and I hadn't seen them in 3 years and they both looked great! They are a lot of fun to be around.
We then picked up groceries and went out to the house to set up. There is a bit involved in that, taking the furniture down and removing plastic and making up beds and stuff like that. We came back into Campeche later in the evening and went to see Ricardo y Blanca. Jim & I got to meet their 2 kids (who were born since the last time we were there). They are both beautiful kids and so much fun! Ricardo asked us to be at his house at 10 the next morning as he had a van and driver to take us to Calakmul. That was wonderful of him! It is about a 5 hour drive and gets you within an hour of Guatamala.
So Thursday morning we got up and went to Ricardo and Blanca's. We said good morning to Blanca and the kids, met our driver (Juan Fernando) and were off to Calakmul. Oops! We forgot the sandwiches we packed for the next day. Sure was a good thing San Lorenzo is on the way down.
We stayed at a great little hotel called Calakmul Hotel in Xpujil. The interesting thing about the hotel was that there was no glass in the windows. There were screens and wooden shutters, but no glass. It was kind of neat.
So we got up bright and early Friday morning (Happy Birthday Jim!) and drove another hour and a half to Calakmul. After getting to the gates, I thought we would see pyramids as soon as we got in........I can be so naive sometimes!
We walked on a trail like this for a LONG time......
I decided to take a pic of my honey.....
OK, this is the teaser. I will write more later with LOTS of pics of Calakmul. I climbed 5 pyramids!
